Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Football is a global sport where players often rely on agents as intermediaries during their careers. The agent's role encompasses complex issues related to economics, law, and negotiations. Despite the agent's significance, there is widespread mistrust in the industry, often linked to agents prioritizing their own financial interests over the players', which can lead to conflicts of interest and opportunistic behaviour. Research has shed light on the agent's role and the problems surrounding mistrust, but a deeper understanding of which specificfactors build and maintain trust between players and agents is less explored. The purpose of this study is to investigate which factors influence trust in the relationship between players and agents, and how a lack of trust can affect the outcome of player transfers or contract negotiations.

A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with players, agents, and sporting directors active in Swedish elite football has been employed to illuminate the relationships from multiple perspectives. The empirical data has been analysed through a thematic analysis based on principal-agent theory and trust factors such as ability, benevolence, and integrity
