Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how young residents aged seventeen to twenty two in the Stockholm suburb of Fittja perceive the intensified police presence introduced in 2024 and how these perceptions influence their trust in law enforcement. Six semi structured interviews were examined through thematic analysis and interpreted with the concepts of legitimacy, trust and power. The findings reveal that police visibility is experienced as both reassuring and intrusive. Arbitrary stops, limited explanations and perceived ethnic profiling, which in turn erodes legitimacy and reduces willingness to cooperate with the police. At the same time participants suggest that respectful dialogue, sustained presence in schools and youth centres and a greater number of female and locally rooted officers could rebuild confidence and improve relations. The study provides detailed insight into how specific policing practices can tip the balance between security and surveillance in a socioeconomically disadvantaged setting.
