Correct Mandarin tones are crucial for understandable pronunciation but mastering the Mandarin tones is difficult for non-native Mandarin speakers. This research aimed to investigate which learning and teaching strategies Swedish adults, with a pitch language as native language, prefer to improve their Mandarin tones. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five beginner students and five intermediate students. The participants were asked questions about their language learning, challenges and strategies. Additionally, they were inquired to rate learning and teaching strategies using the Likert-scale during the interview. The rating part was analysed using descriptive statistics and the interview content were analysed using thematic analysis. The results suggest that learning strategies differ depending on language level; Swedish beginner students prefer strategies such as being aware of the tones when reading or speaking, whilst Swedish intermediate students prefer to learn tones by comparing their pronunciation with that of a native speaker. Both beginner and intermediate students prefer the teaching strategies: to be corrected by teacher and teacher pointing out their weakness.
