Psykiskt våld i nära relationer är en subtil och ofta osynlig form av misshandel som kan få allvarliga konsekvenser för offrets psykiska hälsa, identitet och självkänsla. Trots allvaret är denna form av våld ofta underanmäld och missförstådd, delvis på grund av rådande könsnormer och stereotyper om hur våld yttrar sig och vem som kan vara offer.

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur personal vid kvinno- och mansjourer uppfattar och erfara psykiskt våld bland hjälpsökande kvinnor och män, samt hur samhälleliga normer påverkar både utsatthet, bemötande och tillgång till stöd för de drabbade.

För att få en djupare förståelse genomfördes kvalitativa intervjuer med tre medarbetare från kvinnojourer och tre från mansjourer. Genom tematisk analys identifierades två övergripande teman. Varje tema innehåller flera subteman som belyser olika aspekter av hur psykiskt våld upplevs, hur det påverkar individen och hur det tolkas i relation till könsnormer. Dessa teman presenteras i studiens resultatdel.

Resultaten visar att psykiskt våld ofta handlar om kontroll, isolering och förnedring,och att både kvinnor och män drabbas. Jourerna upplever utmaningar kopplade till dominerande samhällsföreställningar som ramar in kvinnor som offer och män som förövare, vilket kan försvåra för män att få adekvat stöd och erkännande.

Studien understryker behovet av att öka synligheten för psykiskt våld som ett köns- och normstyrt fenomen samt betonar vikten av vidare forskning om könsspecifika och inkluderande stödsystem.

Psychological violence in intimate relationships is a subtle and often invisible form of abuse that can have serious consequences for the victim’s mental health, identity, and self-esteem. Despite its severity, this form of violence remains under-reported and frequently misunderstood, partly due to prevailing gender norms and stereotypes regarding the expression of violence and assumptions about who can be a victim.

This study aims to explore how staff at women’s and men’s shelters perceive and experience psychological violence among help-seeking women and men, and how societal norms influence both exposure, treatment, and access to support for those affected.

To gain a deeper understanding, qualitative interviews were conducted with three staff members from women’s shelters and three from men’s shelters. Using thematic analysis, two overarching themes were identified. Each theme contains several subthemes that highlight different aspects of how psychological violence is experienced, how it affects the individual, and how it is interpreted in relation to gender norms. These themes are presented in the results section of the study.

The findings show that psychological violence often involves control, isolation, and humiliation, and that both women and men are affected. The shelters report being challenged by dominant societal perceptions that frame women as victims and men as perpetrators, which can hinder access to adequate support and recognition for male victims.

The study highlights a clear need to make psychological violence more visible as agendered and norm-driven phenomenon and emphasizes the importance of further research into gender-sensitive and inclusive support systems.
