Abstract [en]

This study explores how immigrants in Sweden experience their integration process with a specific focus on the barriers and enabling factors they encounter and the strategies they employ to navigate these challenges. A qualitative research design was employed, using semi-structured interviews with eight participants, including both first-generation and second-generation immigrants. A thematic analysis was conducted, and three main themes appeared: conditional belonging, adaptive strategies, and, finally, standing my ground. These findings highlight the disconnect between immigrants’ own definition of belonging and society’s aspiration of integration. The study also indicates how first- and second generation immigrants use different strategies. Moreover, this study emphasises how the relationships immigrants form with each other acts as an enabling factor in relation to the integration process.
