Tacit Vulnerability Knowledge in Action (and the Pact) : Interview Study with Street-Level Bureaucrats in Compulsory School for Pupils with Intellectual Disabilities (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to explore what paraprofessionals and special education teachers in Compulsory School for Pupils with Intellectual Disabilities negotiate about micropolitically regarding the welfare of their students. The material consists of interviews with five people working as paraprofessionals and four special education teachers at different schools within a metropolitan municipality. The analysis shows that the five people working as paraprofessionals, based on the theory of Michael Lipsky (1980), are actual grassrootsbureaucrats. In addition to this, a care discourse dominates, in the material, at the expense of a teaching discourse, in agreement with the theory of Karin Lager (2018). To manage the collision between care discourse and teaching discourse, theory of sociology of emotions by Eva Olsson (2008) and Peter Andersson (2021) is combined with Bengt Molander’s (1996) and Bertil Rolf’s (1991) theories of (tacit) knowledge-in-action to understand the negotiation of knowledge in vulnerability. The thesis concludes that more time together should be guaranteed for reflection on experiences and the assessment of vulnerability as a central form of knowledge-in-action in the negotiation of teaching within the dominant care discourse.
