The Church of Sweden's work to counteract involuntary loneliness : “If everyone was a fellow human being, my job wouldn't have to exist" (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Involuntary loneliness has become a growing social problem and is now recognized as a public health disease. Involuntary loneliness is a highly urgent and often overlooked social issue, as usually becomes invisible due to its lack of voice in public discourse. In February 2025, a national strategy called on the entire population to unite to prevent involuntary loneliness.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to examine the experience of diaconal activities in the Church of Sweden, including involuntary loneliness and the importance of the religious dimension.

Method: A qualitative study was conducted with semi-structured interviews, where five workers in diaconal activities shared their experiences regarding involuntary loneliness. The interviews were analyzed using a thematic analysis method.

Results: The analysis yielded three themes, with eight sub-themes demonstrating the importance of community, belonging and context. It also emerged that the spiritual and existential dimension is essential for people to find meaning in life.

Conclusion: Social work, carried out by diaconal activities, is an essential part of the work done to counteract involuntary loneliness. The respondents' vision is to be able to function as a complement to other institutions and authorities working in similar areas.
