From Outsourcing to Insourcing : A study of organizational and strategic factors influencing sourcing decisions within a global industrial company (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
In recent years, there has been a paradigm shift where more companies have started to re-evaluate their sourcing choices, from outsourcing to insourcing. This study analyses why a global steel company (hereafter referred to as Company AB) chooses to insource IT activities after a decade of outsourcing. The aim is to explain the organizational and strategic factors driving the shift and to highlight how Transaction Cost Economics (TCE) and Resource-Based View (RBV) together explain the decision.
The study is based on a mixed-method approach, in the form of semi-structured interviews with key decision makers supplemented by a questionnaire survey to the company's IT department. The interview data was analyzed thematically while the survey is reported through descriptive statistics.
The results show that high transaction costs described in the study as hidden costs and quality deficiencies in the outsourcing model were a decisive factor for the company. Respondents agree that they can already see improved customer satisfaction and improved internal communication as well as increased employee motivation. However, there are significant start-up costs and difficulties in recruiting top talent. Based on the theories of (TCE), these decisions can be explained by the market-based costs of control, monitoring and opportunism that have increased over time. (RBV) shows how internal recruitment and skills development is an opportunity for the company to achieve and maintain a sustained competitive advantage (SCA) by utilizing the company's internal resources and capabilities.
The study shows that the company's choice to start insourcing IT activities is to reduce transaction costs and address quality issues. This shift has created an opportunity for the company to start building internal competences that over time will develop into valuable and hard-to-imitate internal resources to achieve (SCA)
