Leadership in practice : A qualitative study on the importance of leadership for functional teams (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study explores how employees experience leadership in their everyday teamwork, and what kind of leadership helps teams function well. In today’s work environment, where collaboration and flexibility are important leadership plays a big role. To understand this better, I interviewed six people with different jobs and backgrounds to hear how they see their leaders and what they feel is most important.

The results show that leadership makes the biggest difference in the small things – like being present, communicating clearly, and giving support. Many participants said their leaders were not very visible or gave unclear directions, which made work more confusing and less motivating. But when leaders were involved, gave feedback, and helped create structure, teams felt more focused and worked better together.

The study connects these findings to leadership theories like situational leadership, transformational leadership, and emotional intelligence. These ideas say that good leaders know how to adjust their style depending on the situation and the people in the team. Simple things like saying” thanks”, asking for input, or being available really matter.

It’s also clear that people need different kinds of leadership. Some want clear plans and routines, other want more trust and freedom. A strong leader doesn’t have to be perfect – just present, open, and willing to grow with the team.

In short, leadership sets the tone for the whole team. When it works, it builds trust, motivation and teamwork. When leadership is missing, it creates confusion and stress. Hopefully, this study can give some insight into what everyday leadership looks like from an employee’s pointof view – and how small actions can make a big difference.
