Our aim in this study is to investigate what attitudes Chileans residing in Stockholm have towards the language: mapudungun. Other objectives are to measure the interest the informants have in learning Mapudungun as well as if our informants identify themselves as Mapuche. This study has been conducted among a small sample that consists of 22 people between the ages of 30-60. The informants have answered a questionnaire consisting of two parts. In the first part it was established the ethnic identity of the informants and their desire to learn the language. Based on these results, they have been divided into three groups (mapuche, not mapuche and unsure) in order to investigate the differences in their attitudes depending on their ethnicity. The second part of the questionnaire consisted of items. The informants have expressed their attitudes towards 10 positive as well as negative items regarding mapudungun. The result of the analysis indicates that there is a positive attitude towards Mapudungun. However, the results show that attitudes differ between groups. It was noticed a more positive attitude in the Mapuche group. We have also noticed an interest in learning Mapudungun among the Mapuche informants whereas the non-Mapuche group has shown an interest in learning English.
