Gamification to encourage sustainable travel : Which gamedesign elements promote sustainable transport choices? (English)
Abstract [en]

Private transport has a significant negative impact on the environment, public health and the socio-economy. Despite the knowledge that public transport can fix this, cars are still a popular choice of means of transport. This may be due to ignorance, lack of consequential thinking or that it is such habitual behavior. Gamification has been shown to be an effective tool for increasing the use of public transport. This study aims to investigate which game design elements can encourage sustainable travel. Using theories such as self-determination theory (SDT) and frameworks such as Octalysis, the study investigates this based on qualitative and quantitative data collection. The conclusion of the study indicates that the game design elements performance graphs and points combined with meaningful feedback and tangible rewards have the greatest potential to effectively motivate the individual to travel collectively. Efforts that should be prioritized are the SDTneeds autonomy and competence as well as the core drives accomplishment and empowerment defined in the Octalysis framework.
