Cost Optimization in Cloud Migration : Cloud Architects’ Perspectives on Strategies and Challenges. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Cloud migration is a technical and strategic process where IT resources such as applications, databases, and servers are moved from local environments to cloud-based platforms. The goal is often to increase flexibility, scalability, and cost-efficiency. In practice, however, new challenges arise in managing and optimizing costs.

This study explores how cloud architects work with cost optimization during cloud migration. The focus is on technical strategies, tool selection, and the organizational and business-related considerations that influence decision-making. The study is based on semistructured interviews with professional cloud architects experienced in both AWS and Azure. Their insights were complemented by AI-generated responses from the language models ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot, which were instructed to act as experienced cloud architects.

The findings show that cost optimization is not a one-time phase, but an ongoing process requiring continuous monitoring and adjustment. Technical solutions such as auto-scaling, rightsizing, and budget tools are combined with governance structures, accountability, and cross-functional collaboration within the organization.

The AI-generated responses demonstrate technical breadth and structure but lack the contextual awareness, trade-offs, and real-world nuance reflected in the human interviews. The study concludes that effective cost optimization demands more than technical solutions— it requires the ability to operate at the intersection of technology, finance, and organizational dynamics.
