Remote Leadership : Autonomy Within Organizational Boundaries: A Study on Leadership’s Role in Balancing Employee Autonomy with Organizational Mission and Demands in Remote Work Settings (English)
Abstract [en]

This study explores the leadership styles used by leaders to balance employees' need for autonomy with organizational demands in remote work settings. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with leaders from various sectors. The findings reveal that leaders combine transformational, transactional, and situational leadership to develop flexible and individualized strategies. Leadership styles are adapted based on employees’ experience levels, the nature of the tasks, and the digital work environment. Trust, communication, and clear structure emerged as key factors for effective remote leadership. The study provides insights into how leadership practices can be developed to meet contemporary demands for flexibility and self-directed work.

Abstract [sv]

Detta arbete undersöker vilka ledarskapsstilar som används av ledare för att balansera medarbetares behov av autonomi med organisationens krav vid distansarbete. Studien bygger på en kvalitativ ansats med semistrukturerade intervjuer med ledare inom olika branscher. Resultatet visar att ledare kombinerar transformativt, transaktionellt och situationsanpassat ledarskap för att skapa flexibla och individanpassade strategier. Ledarna anpassar sin stil beroende på medarbetarens erfarenhet, arbetsuppgiftens natur och den digitala kontexten. Tillit, kommunikation och tydlig struktur framstår som centrala faktorer för ett effektivt distansledarskap. Studien bidrar med insikter om hur ledarskap kan utvecklas för att möta samtidens krav på flexibilitet och självständigt arbete.
