The Importance of Collaboration for Reuse in Large-Scale Construction Projects. : A Study Focused on the New Campus at Dalarna University. (English)
Abstract [en]

This thesis examines how collaboration between actors affects the possibilities of implementing reuse in large-scale construction projects. The study is based on the construction of the new campus area at Dalarna University, where reuse was applied both in the building structure and in interior design. Through interviews with representatives from the university and the contractor, as well as a literature review, the work identifies the factors that facilitate or hinder collaboration. The results show that early collaboration, clear goals, and trust-based relationships are crucial for reuse to work in practice. The project used partnering as a working method, which enabled close communication and joint decisions throughout the process. The study also shows that there are several challenges linked to reuse, such as technical limitations, changing requirements during the construction process, and a lack of standardized methods. Despite this, the project was able to carry out several reuse efforts, including the reuse of large parts of the concrete structure and approximately 1,650 pieces of furniture. The aim of the study has been to contribute knowledge on how collaboration can be used as a tool to promote reuse in larger construction projects. The study also highlights the importance of long-term planning, clear division of responsibilities, and carrying forward lessons learned into future projects.
