Gaze, Desire, and Destiny : A Feminist Comparative Reading of Indiana, Madame Bovary, and Nana (English)
Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a comparative analysis of Indiana by George Sand, Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, and Nana by Émile Zola through the lens of gender studies. It examines how the heroines are portrayed, particularly when they express desire or seek a form of freedom. The aim is to understand how the perspectives directed at them—whether harsh, sympathetic, or ambivalent—shape their narrative destinies. Rather than establishing a direct causal link between the author’s gender and the fate of the female character, the study highlights the narrative strategies, focalizations, and ideological frameworks at work in each novel. The theoretical framework draws on the concepts of the male gaze (Laura Mulvey), resistant reading (Mary Devereaux), symbolic domination (Pierre Bourdieu), and the feminist stylistic gaze (Azélie Fayolle). The analysis suggests that each heroine, in her own way, embodies the tensions of a world governed by patriarchal norms. A feminist rereading allows for a deeper understanding of these figures and reveals a critical perspective on the constraints imposed on women.
