Abstract [es]

Abstract [en]

This study analyses and compares the visibility of the LGBTQI community in the two most recent editions of the most widely used textbooks for teaching the levels 3 and 4 of Spanish as a Foreign Language in Swedish Upper Secondary School. It also explores students’ perceptions of this representation. The data were compiled and analysed through Critical Discourse Analysis and a student survey. The results show that sexual minorities are underrepresented and that there is a trend toward greater inclusivity in the newer editions, mainly through less explicit heteronormative references and greater ambiguity in the representation of gender and sexuality. Furthermore, the data reveals that the students perceive limited LGBTQI visibility in the analysed textbooks. Therefore, it can be concluded that the materials are heteronormative and do not represent the goals of the Swedish educational policy. Moreover, the ambiguous representation of gender and sexuality is insufficient to represent the sexual minorities, and therefore a more explicit inclusion of LGBTQI identities in future editions is needed.
