Abstract [en]
Angolan society is attested to have high gender inequality as measured by the most recent Global Gender Gap Index and the gender gap in the political sphere is particularly wide. Under President João Lourenço some public policy measures have been launched to address this gap and in his political discourses he has underscored the role of women, evidenced by the increase in the number of women in key positions in the executive, judicial, and legislative branches. Against this backdrop, this empirical study sets out to analyze the presence of and the representation of Angolan women in the mediatic public debate before, during and after the 2022 elections and is based on data from 24 media channels that were monitored by a group of twenty young Angolans over a 12-month period. Methodologically, the study relies on a combination of thematic and discourse analyses and a mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results show that women in mediatic discourses, appear more frequently in cultural spheres than in economic and political spheres. The Angolan women who appear in the political sphere, are predominantly representatives of the Angolan elite. In the economic sphere, Angolan women are close to invisible. Moreover, results demonstrate that the representation of Angolan women in media are either objectified, represented as caregivers or as passive subjects, reflecting limitations in their presence in public space and reinforcing stereotypes about their role in society and politics.
