This study investigates the role of sound in creating feelings of threat and tension without a visual representation of the danger. The study focuses on examining three films: Jaws, A Quiet Place and Alien. The method applied is thematic analysis to identify recurring themes in the sound design, and linking them to semiotics. The result reveald that the sound design in the analysed films was characterized by four central themes: The emotional and narrative function of music, Silence creating anticipation, Increased intensity and rhythm to induce a stressful situation, and The symbol of the monsters presance. These themes demonstrate the various functions of sound building tension and can inspire filmmakers to experiment with subtle and creative uses of sound to enhance the emotional impact of a story.

Denna studie undersöker ljudets roll i att skapa känslor av hot och spänning utan en visuell representation av faran. Studien fokuserar på att undersöka de tre olika filmerna: Jaws, A Quiet Place och Alien. Metoden som tillämpats var tematisk analys för att identifiera återkommande teman i ljuddesignern genom att koppla det till semiotiken. Resultatet visade att ljuddesignern i de analyserade filmerna kännetecknades av fyra centrala teman: Musikens emotionella och narrativa funktion, Tystnad som skapar en förväntan, Ökad intensitet och rytm för att skapa en stressad situation och Symbol för monstrets närvaro. Dessa teman visar ljudets olika funktioner för att skapa spänning och kan inspirera filmskapare att experimentera med subtila och kreativa användningar av ljud för att förstärka berättelsens emotionella effekt.
