Abstract [en]

Note

The article explores the complex and multifaceted figure of Queen Christina of Sweden, who, after abdicating the Scandinavian throne, reshaped in Rome a new political and cultural identity. Tradition and historiography have attributed to her multiple images: heretical queen turned Catholic, ruler without a kingdom, alchemist, but above all the “Minerva of the North,” patron of arts, letters, and sciences. This image, deliberately cultivated by Christina herself, emerges as central: that of an intellectual sovereign who transformed cultural patronage into an instrument of legitimation and political influence. Drawing on archival and literary sources, the study reconstructs the networks of protection and patronage strategies, with particular attention to Christina’s support for medical sciences and Roman intellectual life. The interdisciplinary approach shows how she turned political marginality into cultural centrality, making her court a European crossroads of diplomacy, scholarship, and spectacle, and laying the foundations of a memory that consecrated her as Queen of Rome.
