Swedish security policy studies have mostly been characterized by the liberal perspective where the positive attitude that arose after the Cold War is the supposed reason. This world view remained until superpowers started to act hostile towards other states and chose to disregard the rule-based international order. The situation today is described as intense and is compared to the atmosphere during the Cold War. This essay studies the theoretical changes that the Swedish security policy doctrine has undergone the last twenty years with the help of realism and liberalism. The main material used in this essay is the Defense Committee’s security policy reports. The results show clear liberal aspects in the beginning of the 2000s but shifts with a more prominent presence of the realism perspective by 2024 through Sweden’s historical entry into the defense alliance Nato.
