Border, Space and the Body in the Films Biutiful and Victoria2022Ingår i: Representing 21st-century Migration In Europe: Performing Borders, Identities and Texts / [ed] Nelson González Ortega and Ana Belén Martínez García, New York, Oxford: Berghahn Books, 2022Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter examines the role of space and the body as carriers of metaphorical meanings related to the notions of the border and migration in the films Biutiful and Victoria. In it, special attention is paid to the way these films use subterranean space to highlight understandings of subversion and exclusion. Limbo, on the other hand, is associated to transition and waiting, key elements of the migrant experience. Visibility/invisibility and speech/silence are also recurring in the metaphorical processes attached to corporality, underground and limbo in these films.

Discussion Forums in Literature and Film2021Ingår i: Designing Courses with Digital Technologies: Insights and Examples from Higher Education / [ed] Stefan Hrastinski, New York and London: Routledge, 2021Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter looks at the use of online discussion forums in a course that unites the study of film, literature and history. The aim is to discuss how asynchronous forums can be designed in such a way that they encourage students' dialogue and promote their analytical skills while at the same time remaining respectful spaces. Key issues discussed here are group size, the role of the teacher, cyberincivility, session length and instructions. This chapter argues that the number of participants and session length have to be carefully considered in order to avoid groups that are too large or forums that are open for too long, because both are seen to decrease student interaction. Other considerations are the inhibiting effect that active teacher participation tends to have in the forum and the role of instructions given to students to avoid cyberincivility.

Migrants and Other Others in 2020 by Javier Moreno2021Ingår i: Narratives Crossing Borders: The Dynamics of Cultural Interaction / [ed] Herbert Jonsson, Lovisa Berg, Chatarina Edfeldt & Bo G. Jansson, Stockholm: Stockholm University Press, 2021, s. 52-74Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this chapter is to study the representation of different borders and its role in the portrayal of otherness in 2020 by Javier Moreno. 2020 is a novel built on the thoughts and voices of a series of characters. Amongst these, we can find Nabil, a young man of Saharawi origin; Jorge, a homeless man with Asperger’s; Josefina, a rich young anorexic woman; and her father, Gowan, a successful businessman of Scottish origin, who has disappeared and is involved in the creation of a mystic revolutionary movement. We explore the ways in which the novel builds a dystopic society through the representation of dysfunctional characters embodying different kinds of otherness and the way in which spatiality and the body are key to understanding how this otherness is created and reinforced.

With the help of the notions of limbo, non-places, hybridity, simulacrum and the dichotomy center-periphery we examine how borders are raised in the novel and how these affect the characters and the depiction of a society in decline. The notions of void and ruins recur as topics in the novel, and are an obsession for Gowan, who is both an observer and a creator of ruins through a series of actions that represent a wider economic reality where objects are bought, sold and trashed.

We study how the body, which in a way is the first barrier between the characters and the outside, plays a significant role in the novel as a marker of ethnicity, physical illness or, as with Josefina, as the recipient and target of an obsession for corporal void, latent in her eating disorder. Decay, in terms of both the character’s bodies and the spaces around them, functions in 2020 as a metaphor of a dysfunctional socio-economic system that is collapsing.

En busca del espacio perdido; la crisis y el espacio urbano en La habitación oscura y Animales domésticos2019Ingår i: Revista de literatura (Madrid), ISSN 0034-849X, E-ISSN 1988-4192, Vol. 81, nr 162, s. 549-572Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

    Migración, espacio y exclusión en 2020 de Javier Moreno2019Ingår i: Bergen Language and Linguistic Studies, E-ISSN 1892-2449, Vol. 10, nr 1, s. 1-9Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A number of novels about the financial crisis and its consequences have been written in Spain in recent years. In most, migrants are represented in a secondary role, often as short allusions or as mere ornaments. This article aims to highlight one novel, 2020 by Javier Moreno, that breaks that pattern since it features migrant characters in key roles. The article further aims to analyse the relationship between space and the representation of the migrant in the context of a society in crisis. The notions of non-place by Marc Augé and heterotopia by Michel Foucault will serve as the theoretical framework that will allow for an exploration of phenomena such as the inversion of non-places into places, the connection of crisis and deviation, the role of certain spaces as both shelters and containers of the unwanted, the role of gaze in the construction of an exclusion, and the circular movement of powerless characters in time and space throughout the novel.

El teatro de García Lorca y la transfiguración del personaje masculino2018Ingår i: Teatro: Revista de Estudios Culturales, ISSN 2174-579X, Vol. 32Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This essay looks at slash, a genre within fanfiction, from the perspective of Sedgwick’s theory of the closet, which reflects on the concealing mechanisms associated with homosexuality. While the real author stays in the closet, disguised behind a pseudonym, slash texts present homosexual themes in a very explicit way, often relying on humor or subversive elements. Between these two spheres, the real author and the text, we can find what we call the author’s voice, conscious about the existing homophobic structures, a voice that uses different strategies to shield itself against them. Internet, with the possibility to stay anonymous, serves as a social closet where the masked authors create texts that subvert heteronormativity.

    Abstract [un]

In this thesis, the main male characters in three of the plays written by Federico García Lorca are analysed with the aim of seeing the role they play in the frustration of desire. After two chapters dedicated to a review of published critical studies on Lorca and to certain theoretical considerations, Chapter Three examines desire drawing on Ubersfeld's actancial model and observes that these male characters can be divided into two groups: those who are desired and those who are undesired. In Chapter Four this classification is linked to an analysis of absence, prohibition and lack. Absence is here defined not as related to their non-appearance on stage but rather to their non-presence in the lives of the desiring female protagonists. It is observed that a number of male characters are absent in the plays mainly due to death or a journey. As far as prohibition is concerned, in two of the works, there is a moral code associated with concepts such as "honour" and "decency", which blocks the female characters' access to the males they desire. Chapter Four also shows how several characters can be considered as lacking in the sense that they do not possess the ideal male qualities contained in the plays. This chapter reaches the conclusion that desired male characters are either absent or forbidden in the world of the desiring female, whereas undesired male characters are lacking in the sense that they fail to live up to the ideal highlighted in the plays. Chapter Five analyses the female characters' perception of the male figures, making use of René Girard's notion of "transfiguration", which alludes to a process of idealisation of the object of desire. Our analysis reveals a connection between desire, denied access to the object of desire and transfiguration in the main subjects of desire. The phenomenon of "transfiguration" has several functions in the play: firstly, the creation of hyperbolical male characters; secondly, that of transmitting the intensity of the desire experienced and, finally, the highlighting of the lack of certain qualities in several male characters. We thus observe that, in these three plays written by García Lorca, Girard's pessimistic view of desire is confirmed, since desire needs a series of obstacles, such as absence or prohibition, to survive. However, this is not the only explanation for the frustration of desire: other factors, like the actions of certain male characters or destiny, also play a decisive role.
