    Abstract [en]

    The article questions the dynamics of the contemporary literary scandal through the controversy caused by the novel Submission (2015) by the French writer Michel Houellebecq. This novel seeks to provoke the reader by staging a scenario that plays on the fears of Islam. The study focuses on a TV interview with Houellebecq at the Journal de France 2, on January 6, 2015, the day before the publication of the novel. The analyse shows that the journalist aims to bring out the writer’s personal point of view, which is likely to enhance the desirable polemic, whereas the writer remains evasive asserting the autonomy of literature. From this performance on the media scene, one can observe the constructed character of literary polemics of today, where the transgression becomes the pretext to attract public attention. This new logic of literary polemics seriously questions the possibility of real scandals to arise in literature.

    The article focuses on a type of literary manifesto published individually and outside the context of a group, thus differing from its original collective form. A statistical study based on the Manart database shows that these texts have become proportionately more common since the 1980s, representing today more than fifty percent of the literary manifestoes in France. The aim of the paper is to identify the formal and discursive implications related to the use of a genre considered as historic. The study of five cases—published by the poets Jean-Marie Gleize, Alain Jouffroy, Henri Meschonnic and Christophe Tarkos, and by the writer-cartoonist Frederic Pajak—indicates a tendency to fuse the literary work and the esthetical program, but also to make use of the rhetoric of the avant-garde in order to energize the texts. Together with the absence of collective dimension, even the intention of the literary manifestos seems altered: they are now less a gesture of revolutionary subversion than an act of resistance, since these voices are making present a literary history to defend in today’s society.

    Using the example of manifestos in literature and arts, this article examines the epistemological consequences of the digitisation of documentary heritage on research in the humanities. Through a comparison between paperanthologies of manifestos and the Manart database, – regarding their internal organisation, the practices they give rise to and the form of materiality they present – the article seeks to determine the underlying logic of their legitimacy and toevaluate their implications on the modalities of knowledge construction. This approach leads to the question of whether the emergence of a new digital episteme entails not only a structural redefinition of documentary archives, but also aredefinition of the disciplinary frameworks of the humanities.

    This study shows how features of the literary manifesto, a genre associated with the avant-garde period, are integrated in three contemporary French novels: Le Caoutchouc décidément (1992) by Éric Chevillard, Tout-monde (1993) by Édouard Glissant and Le Post-exotisme en dix leçons, leçon onze (1998) by Antoine Volodine. The aim of the study is to understand what these features reveal about the way writers today claim a position in the literary field and to determine whether the novels can be considered a continuation of the manifesto genre in present times. To conduct this research in the fields of the novel and of the manifesto, a pragmatic approach is applied. The macro-speech acts that define the manifesto discourse are outlined and the proclamation of a new aesthetic is found to be dominant. To assess the impact of these macro-speech acts in the novels, it is necessary to take into account the authorial ethos, which indicates the writer’s position. The analyses expose that the fictional worlds consolidate the aesthetic convictions that the writers seek to assert in the literary field. In fact, to different degrees, the novels reproduce the performativity of the manifesto. However, the manifesto discourse in the novels differs from its original revolutionary form by its loss of the collective enunciation, as well as by its intention: rather than subverting the values of the literary institution, the novels are configured to support them. These results are compared with statistical studies on the evolution of the manifesto genre and with case studies, confirming that the tendencies in the novels correlate with the evolution of the literary manifesto in France.

    L’article interrogera l’usage des codes du genre manifestaire dans deux fictions contemporaines françaises, Le Caoutchouc décidément d’Éric Chevillard (1992) et Le Post-exotisme en dix leçons, leçon onze d’Antoine Volodine (1998). Si, dans le cadre fictionnel, le discours manifestaire semble replié sur lui-même et n’avoir qu’une portée limitée, on montrera, à travers une analyse textuelle croisée, que ce procédé auto-représentatif et auto-théorisant implique dans ces fictions un nouveau type de discours légitimant : en effet, les auteurs y « proclament » une esthétique qui définit leur projet d’écriture, tout en se construisant une position singulière dans l’espace littéraire.

    Cet article propose une étude statistique de l’évolution quantitative connue par le genre manifestaire de 1886 à 2009, dans l’objectif de situer ses « âges d’or » et de vérifier ainsi les idées répandues à son sujet. Dans cette étude, qui s’appuie sur des informations tirées de Manart, une base de données recensant les manifestes artistiques et littéraires du XXe siècle, deux corpus sont mis en comparaison, constitués à partir de critères de sélection différents (critère définitoire et critère de réception). Croisant les approches et les données, une étude contrastive portant sur le manifeste nous semble être la seule qui puisse présenter des résultats solides et un tant soit peu objectifs.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this article is to highlight the importance of the rhetorical concept of ethos in the development of what Jérôme Meizoz (2007) calls a writer’s ‘posture’. The ambition is to show that the concept of posture exceeds the idea of positioning in the literary field, stating that a writer’s self-presentation is a central feature in the mediation process of the literary work in the social space. Using the example of the French writer Antoine Volodine and his fictional work, the article reflects upon the articulation of the posture in fictions whose story is not autobiographical. If one can assume that the discretion of a writer about his private life is a part of his posture, choosing fiction as a field of analysis requires taking into account the complex modalities in which the author manifests his/her presence in the text. The article applies the theoretical contributions developed by Ruth Amossy (2009) in the field of argumentation, where the ethos of the textual enunciator in a fictional corpus - the ‘auctorial ethos’ - is conceived as a means of influence on the reader, which can be deducted from different aspects of the text, such as themes, plot development, imagery and style.
